Clever meeting followup
Posted by Janet Attard

What do you do with those business cards people hand you at networking meetings? Do you copy the contact information into a database and forget about it? Or, just shove the card into a drawer with other contact names you'll get around to calling someday?

Instead of letting all those contacts collect dust until you're ready to "do something" with them, use them to start building name recognition and a business relationship with future clients now.

An insurance broker I met at a recent networking meeting has taken that approach. Although she handed me a business card when we met, she went a step further. To make herself stand out from other insurance agents in the group and in the community, she sent me a letter reminding me where we met and asking that I remember her when I need insurance or hear of anyone who does. In the letter was a packet of Forget-Me-Not flower seeds with her company's name, address and phone number on the package.

It's fall, so I'm not likely to plant the seeds right now. Chances are they'll stay in my desk drawer until next spring, a visual reminder both of the seeds and the need to plant them, and of the company who sent them.

Yours is the one newletter that I always open and read. Sometimes what hits home is just a reminder to me of what I already know, but often it is a great new idea.

Thanks!

Hi, one very cool idea I heard lately… When you take a business card from someone that you want to remember you, send them a postcard (have the postcard designed to look exactly like your business card) write it was nice to meet them, remind them of where you met, and be sure to add a “Thank You”.. I like the idea of having the postcard look like your business card.
